Barrett-Jackson Adds Fourth Day to Las Vegas Collector Car Auction

Published June 28th, 2009

The Barrett-Jackson Auction Company, creator of “The World’s Greatest Collector Car Auctions(TM),” announces its second annual Las Vegas event, taking place Oct. 7-10, 2009, at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino. A fourth day has been added as a result of the overwhelming participation in the inaugural Las Vegas auction that hosted more than 50,000 guests, and sold over 500 cars for a total of $29 million.

Consignment applications, available at www.barrett-jackson.com, are now being accepted for the all “No Reserve” auction, which will feature a unique selection of collector vehicles from classic and one-of-a-kind cars to exotics and muscle cars.

“Adding a fourth day to the auction is a testament to the celebration of the hobby, the resiliency of the collector car market and the quality of bidders and consigners we attract,” says Craig Jackson, Chairman/CEO of Barrett-Jackson. “The city is so dynamic, and attendance exceeded our expectations last year. We are incredibly impressed with the crowd and can’t wait to provide the most action-packed Las Vegas auction yet.”

The 2008 Las Vegas event experienced an influx of qualified new bidders — all 50 states as well as Mexico and Canada were represented — with more than 650 of the over 1,200 bidders being first-time participants. The top selling car was a 1949 MG TC race car that went for $313,500, with the additional top seven cars selling for over $200,000 each.

“The Las Vegas auction will feature top-tier, mid-range, and more affordable vehicles,” added Steve Davis, President of Barrett-Jackson. “This mix will attract a broad range of collectors, as well as provide an exciting experience for all levels of car collectors and enthusiasts.”

In addition to the live auction taking place on the main stage, attendees can walk the floor to inspect all cars available for sale, enjoy exhibitors offering an array of merchandise, and play the Barrett-Jackson slot machines for a chance to win a 2010 Camaro. For those who can’t make it to Las Vegas, SPEED will provide live, high-definition TV coverage of all four auction days.

All necessary consignment forms, along with other valuable information on bidding, ticket sales, vendor listings, updated consigned car lists, catalog pre-sales, and group rates at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino that are available for booking are also available at www.barrett-jackson.com.

H&H Buxton Classic vehicle Auction Results

Published June 28th, 2009

H&H weaved their traditional Buxton magic this week (June 9/10) and delivered some excellent results from their latest sale of collectors’ vehicles and related ephemera, the total proceeds of which were c.£1million.

Despite the inclement weather, the auction had a typically summery theme, with approximately half the car lots being of a sporting nature. The star performer of all was a pretty, metallic blue Bristol-engined AC Ace of 1958. After a period of intense bidding, the iconic two-seater finally made a premium inclusive £121,535 – a figure way above the estimate and thoroughly deserving of the resulting applause.

The extensively restored, red 3.4-litre Jaguar XK150 Roadster of the same year as the Ace rightly attracted enormous attention before eventually finding a new home for £54,635, while the very usable 1955 Aston Martin DB2/4 made £51,290. Of no less than eight Triumphs on offer, the rare 1968 TR5 made £20,070, the very tidy 1973 GT6 fetched £11,373 and a stunningly restored Spitfire returned £8,920 – all matching or exceeding their estimates in the process. While, the Daimler Conquest Roadster Fixed Head Coupe, the sole known survivor of five built, attracted strong interest before being acquired by a European collector for £22,300.

Motorcycles
Eighty three per cent of the motorcycles changed hands, of which the rare and immaculate 1955 Vincent Black Prince was always going to be the top seller. In fact, to much applause it returned £54,635 against an estimate of £30,000-35,000. The charming 1930 Panther 500 also exceeded expectations at £5,798, as did the 1953 350cc BSA Gold Star at £7,526. Even though it couldn’t be ridden home, the astonishing wooden replica of a Harley Davidson Road King made a very deserving £2,564.

Registration numbers
Looking for new ways to invest their money, it seems more and more people are spending it on cherished numbers, and the top seller in this sale was
29 PD, which changed hands for £3,679.

Automobilia
All bar a handful of the hundreds of carefully selected items of automobilia sold. Of particular note were a:
• Breitling 18K gents wristwatch – £8,006
• Large c.1920s cylindrical Shell petrol pump – £1,830
• Signed black and white portrait photo of Achille Varzi – £1,830
• Large metal ‘leaping cat’ Jaguar showroom sculpture – £1,143
• Leather-bound photograph album mainly containing images of pre-war racing cars in action – £972
• Said Simon Hope of H&H: “There is always a good atmosphere at our Buxton sales and this week, as ever, there were buyers for pretty well all the right items. We very much look forward to returning to the venue on July 22 – a sale for which we already have some exciting entries, including another AC Ace.”

The prices quoted above include buyer’s premium and the VAT thereon. For further information and / or images please contact H&H on lo-call 08458 334455 or info@handh.co.uk

Mecum To Auction Chevrolet Corvettes

Published June 25th, 2009

Mecum Auction announces the unique 1963 Harley Earl Chevrolet Corvette Convertible will cross the block during the Bloomington Gold Corvette Auction, June 26-27, 2009, in St. Charles, Ill.

This amazing car joins 400 remarkable specimens of the Corvette marque offered for sale by Mecum at the only all-Corvette auction in the industry.

“Over the years, we have auctioned the’ Who’s Who and What’s What’ in Corvettes at the Bloomington Gold Corvette Auction, from special race cars to rare styling cars and L88s. This year is no exception as hundreds of significant cars go up for bid,” said President Dana Mecum. “The Harley Earl Corvette is a one-of-a-kind factory special whose creation, discovery and restoration have the kind of uniquely storied history that epitomizes the classic car industry.”

As the dean of Detroit stylists in the late 1920s, Harley Earl was responsible for the conception behind America’s sports car during his career at General Motors. When Earl oversaw the display of his Buick Le Sabre show car at the Watkins Glen races in 1951, he resolved to design a new sports car for the American market. He unveiled his concept to the public in 1953, and the Corvette slowly cemented its performance image with the public.

In ’63, GM honored Earl with a custom-built Corvette Sting Ray – one that closely resembled the Corvette show car built for that year’s Chicago Auto Show. After two years, Earl sold the car to a retired Maryland Army veteran. The car resurfaced a decade later, eventually showing up at the Corvettes at Carlisle meet. In 1981, middle school teacher and Corvette enthusiast Joe Clark bought the car from the group of amateur racers who owned it and began researching its history.

Clark discovered a hand-written number code inside a door trim panel – Shop Order (S.O.) 10323 – and learned the Earl Corvette began as a fuel-injection-equipped Red four-speed convertible built after the Chicago show car was completed. Special glovebox-mounted instruments found in Earl’s car were originally intended for the Chicago show car but hadn’t been completed in time. Today, the Earl Corvette still has its distinct side-exit exhausts that sprout from behind the front wheel wells and has been restored to feature its original medium Blue custom leather interiors with White seat trim and Metallic Blue exterior with White trim. A 1963-dated 327/300 HP engine is under the hood, while its chrome trim, exterior emblems, interior control knobs and four-wheel disc brakes are all 1965 parts.

The showcase Harley Earl Corvette (Lot S100) will be sold Saturday, June 27, 2009, at 3:25 p.m.

Additional historic cars crossing the auction block include “The Mitchell Car” – a 1967 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible created by GM styling legend Bill Mitchell as a gift to his wife. The fully customized COPO order features Mitchell’s name on the tank sticker and boasts a 427/400 HP Tri Power V8, automatic transmission and factory air conditioning. Collectors will not be disappointed by the documentation that accompanies the Mitchell car; in addition to the original tank sticker, Protect-O-Plate and shipping papers is a special Chevrolet Memo Book carried by Zora Duntov. It contains design notes and reads “Mr. Mitchell – special order per Z. Duntov” on the cover.

Mecum will also auction a 1967 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe L89 known as “The Ed Cole Car.” This special-order car is one of only 16 L89s built in ’67 and features a 427/435 HP engine, L89 aluminum heads, documentation and Goodwood Green paint with Saddle leather interior.

The Bloomington Gold Corvette Auction is held at Pheasant Run Resort and is open to the general public. Tickets are available at the door for $10. It will be broadcast live on Mecum’s popular television series, “Mecum Auto Auction: Muscle Cars & More” on HD Theater – Discovery Communications’ first 24-hour high-definition cable network, offering compelling real-world and motorized content.

The Mecum Auction Company has been specializing in the sale of collector cars, muscle cars and Corvettes for more than 20 years. In spring 2008, the company sold its 50,000th car. Consignment, Bidder, event and accommodation information is available online at www.Mecum.com or by calling 815.568.8888.

Howard Hughes Lincoln Auctions for $1 Million

Published June 22nd, 2009

A 1936 Lincoln Boat Tail Speedster once owned by Howard Hughes sold for $1 million at the Leake Car Show & Auction in Tulsa on June 13. Previously used as his personal limo, Hughes completely redesigned and restructured the limo into a Boat Tail Speedster. The $1 million dollar sale is the largest single sale in Leake’s history in Tulsa. Over 60% of the cars consigned were sold.

“This was a very unique vehicle, and it was a privilege to auction it in Tulsa,” stated Richard Sevenoaks, president of Leake Auction Company. “Howard Hughes was a very complex man and this car is a reflection of its unique creator.”

“Our Tulsa show was outstanding, and it exceeded our expectations,” Sevenoaks continued. “The auction kicked off on Friday with a large crowd and vigorous bidding. The excitement continued to build throughout the weekend, resulting in record attendance and enthusiastic bidders. This shows that the collector car market is still strong. Nationally, many car auctions have seen a decrease in sales. Industry wide, our Tulsa auction was one of the strongest in the nation for 2009.”

Approximately 10,000 people attended the 2009 Leake Car Show & Auction. Total bids for the auction reached $22 million. Leake registered more than 600 bidders for the show, including a bidder from Australia. The Tulsa auction also had a strong increase in Internet and phone bidding.

Other top selling cars included a 1936 Lincoln Model K Brunn Cabriolet at $187,500, a 1931 Cadillac V-16 Convertible Sedan at $185,000, a 1953 Buick Skylark at $165,00 and a 1932 Packard 903 Super 8 Coupe Roadster at $160,000. A 1937 Lincoln Series K that was used a presidential limo during the Truman and Teddy Roosevelt presidencies sold for $105,000. The SC2000 from 2 Fast 2 Furious did not sell and was bid to $37,000.

The 37th annual Leake Collector Car Show and Auction was held June 12-14 in the QuikTrip Center at Expo Square. 750 cars crossed the two-lane auction block. Leake Auction Company was established in 1964 as one of the first car auctions in the country. More than 40 years later the auction company has sold more than 31,000 cars. Leake Auction Company currently operates auctions in Tulsa, Oklahoma City, Dallas, Houston and San Antonio.

BENTLEY COUPE AT RUSSO AND STEELE’S 9TH ANNUAL MONTEREY AUCTION

Published June 16th, 2009

Russo and Steele’s much anticipated 9th Annual ‘Sports & Muscle at the Marriott’ auction event has earned a reputation for providing superior customer service and unparalleled quality automobiles. It presents a range of the most luxurious and collectable European sports, American muscle, Hot rods and custom automobiles, but will also provide every enthusiast a unique and memorable event. The auction event is August 13th -15th, 2009 at the Marriott Hotel in historic downtown Monterey; presenting a diverse range of highly collectable marquees and models suitable to satisfy any automotive desires.
This absolutely beautiful Derby Bentley six-place convertible with rumble seat is a special “one-off” specifically documented in the Bentley books. It was originally commissioned in 1937 by Scottish sportsman Captain Douglas Krauss and was first registered in the UK in May of 1938 as ELB3. At that time, it was tested and documented by AutoCar Magazine as a “one-off” special-bodied Vanden Plas drophead coupe.

The engine (4.25L) was pulled down in early 1991, and its water jackets were cleaned. No parts required replacement! The body was completely dismantled, bead-blasted to the bare aluminum, then repainted in Mercedes Benz Magnetite Blue. Concurrently, all the chrome was replated at the finest plating facility in the country in Nashville, TN, and the interior was reupholstered using Connolly hides, with English carpeting and separate lambs wool rugs and a German cloth top. New tires were fitted and stainless steel spokes were installed in the wheels and polished. An original luggage rack and trunk were also added.

This past year, two examples of special-bodied Bentleys have graced the auction block here in the USA, and found new owners after considerable long-term ownership. A 1938 Derby fixed head coupe sold for $1.7 + million, and a 1948 drophead coupe for $1.2 + million. Both cars were comparable with B84LS.

This beauty is probably THE finest driving pre-war vintage car in the world today. It is absolutely Concours quality. Displayed at many major Concours d’Elegance events around the country, B84LS has received an initial invitation to the 2009 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance as Bentley is again this year’s featured marquee.

1936 Bugatti for Gooding and Company Auction

Published June 9th, 2009

Gooding & Company, the official auction house for the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, is thrilled to announce the sale of an incomparable piece of Bugatti history – the 1936 Bugatti Type 57C Coupe for its annual Pebble Beach auctions, to be held August 15 – 16, 2009. The Type 57 is the quintessential Bugatti road car and this specific car is considered to be one of the most historically significant examples of its kind.

“This year’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance will be honoring the Bugatti marque and Gooding & Company is delighted to offer, at no reserve, one of the most spectacular Bugattis ever built,” said David Gooding, founder and president of Gooding & Company. Ettore Bugatti’s personal car will undoubtedly capture a great deal of attention during the week and will draw connoisseurs worldwide to our auction.”

Bugatti factory employees originally assembled this 1936 Bugatti Type 57C Coupe as a birthday present for Le Patron, Ettore Bugatti. Deemed as one of its most cherished automobiles, the Bugatti works went to great lengths to protect this precious vehicle during World War II. After Ettore Bugatti’s death in 1947, the car continued to be maintained and stored at the Bugatti workshop in Molsheim, France, where it received factory upgrades as developments progressed. Those upgrades included tailored interior accessories, a unique engine and transmission combination and other subtle technical improvements that distinguished it from any other Type 57. The one-off coachwork is believed to be one of the last designs penned by Ettore’s son, Jean Bugatti before his death.

Since leaving the Bugatti factory in the late 1950s, Chassis 57335 has had only a few protective caretakers, and remains one of the most correct and original Bugattis in existence. The more recent owners of the car have preserved Ettore Bugatti’s intrinsic connection with this automobile. Used only sparingly, the car has never been restored and the breathtaking interior evokes the presence of the legendary Ettore Bugatti himself. Every detail on the spectacular automobile reflects the artistry of the Bugatti marque and it possesses a tangible connection to some of the most important innovators in automotive history.

The Gooding & Company Pebble Beach Auction preview days will be from Wednesday, August 12 through Sunday, August 16, 2009. The auctions will commence at 6:00PM and are located at the Pebble Beach Equestrian Center. Gooding & Company Pebble Beach Auction catalogs are available for $100 and admit two to the viewing and the auction. General admission to the viewing and the auction can be purchased at the tent for $40 per person. Bidder registration forms, press credentials and additional auction information are available on www.goodingco.com

Howard Hughes Legacy Car for Leake Collector Car Auction

Published June 7th, 2009

Some believe this car may have the earmarks to set an “automotive auction record” due to the fact that this car was customized when Hughes was in his most creative stage of his life, about 1937.

After a weeklong reunion with the Spruce Goose (H-4 Hercules), the “Aero-Mobile” has left the Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum in McMinnville Oregon, and is now being prepared for its departure to the Leake Collector Car Auction in Tulsa Oklahoma. There it will be put on the auction block June 13th 2009. The automobile was acquired in 2005 from a museum owner’s estate. It has since been completely restored to the time Hughes had personally customized it. Eyewitness accounts indicate this vehicle was thought by Hughes to be an important part of his legacy, so he preserved it along with the Spruce Goose in a giant climate-controlled hanger in Southern California.

During the complete frame off restoration an auto restoration specialist found Hughes’ 1936 credit card hidden under the fabric and wood lining of the glove box door. It was issued in 1936 by C.D. Rand & Co. located in Southern California. Other items marked Hughes Aircraft were also found.

Howard Hughes was born in Houston Texas in 1905, and died in an airplane enroute to Houston Texas in 1976. Hughes was an American aviator, inventor, industrialist, film producer/director, philanthropist, and one of the wealthiest individuals of all time. He gained fame in the late 1920s as a maverick film producer, filming big budget blockbuster and often-controversial film. Hughes was one of the most influential aviators in history, breaking many world air-speed records (for which he won several awards, including the Congressional Gold Medal). Hughes built the world speed record setting H-1 Racer and the most famous aircraft in the world the H-4 Hercules aircraft, nicknamed the “Spruce Goose” It is the largest aircraft ever built. Hughes was considered not only a creative thinker and inventor but also a Genius whose creative personality is definitely reflected in this extraordinary automobile customization. The car is now known as the Hughes Aero-mobile. Starting with his personal 1936 V-12 Lincoln limousine, Hughes created an aerodynamic boat tail speedster that was definitely a predecessor to the streamlined designs of today’s energy-efficient cars.

After reducing the original weight by thousands of pounds and modifying the engine and exhaust, this car would have easily cruised in excess of 100 MPH. Originally Hughes might have started out to compete in some sort of speed contest; however, some say Hughes was developing retractable aircraft landing gear and had to create a car that could keep up with airplanes while filming high speed take offs and landings.

Other Hughes owned or customized cars have sold for millions, however none have been customized to the extent of this car, or during this stage of Hughes’ life. If interested in bidding or for more information about the car you can access the website: http://www.Hughes36.com

Mecum Spring Classic Auction Approaches $40 Million In Sales

Published June 5th, 2009

Hundreds of collector cars left the Indianapolis State Fairgrounds with new owners during the 22nd Annual Mecum Original Spring Classic Auction, May 13-17, 2009, in Indianapolis, Ind. The five-day auction boasted total gross sales (including buyer’s premium) approaching $40 million.

Mecum offered more than 1,000 high-quality collector cars and 350 vintage neon signs – which have exploded in popularity and value during the past few years – to registered bidders, reporting a 70% sold rate for the Indy auction.

“I think the economy is tough right now, but we’re taking the position that we’re going to exist above it,” said President Dana Mecum. “Three years ago at the peak of the collector car hobby, we sold a best of $30 million. In the current economic climate, the team at Mecum got back to basics and worked hard for buyers and sellers to have the strongest presentation of cars and registered bidders we’ve ever organized. The Mecum employees deserve all the credit for their wonderful customer service, energy and dedication at the auction.”

Mecum estimates final sales for the Spring Classic Auction will reach $40 million with The Bid Goes On purchases. When cars don’t sell on the auction block at a reserve auction, Mecum continues to market those vehicles through its program The Bid Goes On, which has successfully sold 35 cars for $2.5 million in sales from the Indy event with additional deals pending.

The legendary 1965 Shelby Daytona Cobra Coupe did not meet the reserve on the auction block, but continues to be marketed at The Bid Goes On. Serving as the centerpiece for the Indy Spring Classic, the Shelby Daytona brought great energy and many new customers to the auction.

“Several interested buyers are making offers on this big-ticket racecar, which reflects the high quality of vehicles that Mecum Auction attracts,” said Mecum. “In its first race the Shelby Daytona Cobra did not finish but went on to win the world championship. While it did not sell over the weekend, it will certainly finish in record form again.”

The Original Spring Classic’s Top 10 Sales (all sales reflect hammer prices) were:

1966 Shelby 427 S/C Cobra Roadster CSX 3034 (Lot F248.1) at $1,165,000
1966 Shelby Cobra 427 Ex-Tom Payne Competition Roadster CSX 3020 (Lot F246) at $1,000,000
1967 Shelby GT500 Convertible (Lot F248) at $825,000
1964 Cooper Monaco King Cobra (Lot F237) at $600,000
1970 Chevrolet Chevelle Convertible (Lot S126) at $375,000
1938 Indy Blue Crown Special Racecar (Lot F256) at $375,000
1965 Chevrolet Chevelle SS Z16 (Lot S122) at $335,000
1969 Chevrolet Chevelle COPO Hardtop (Lot S124) at $310,000
1955 Chevrolet Corvette Duntov Test Mule (Lot F208) at $310,000
1970 Plymouth Hemi Superbird (Lot S180.1) at $300,000
More than 14,000 buyers, sellers and general car enthusiasts attended this year’s auction.

Complete Original Spring Classic Auction results are available to Mecum InfoNet members, which is free to join at http://www.mecum.com/infonet/infonet.cfm. Mecum InfoNet members can log in to see car-by-car results by visiting the Consignments Page. Mecum’s upcoming St. Paul Auction with the Minnesota Street Rod Association is June 20, 2009, at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds and will feature 250 collector cars.
